Ehhh, Twitter
So I've never had a Twitter, and I am, on principle, strongly opposed to Elon Musk and I don't want to contribute to any of his empires, but I do want to contribute as thoroughly as I am able to our class discussions and idea sharing. I know I can choose to follow the Twitter without making an account, but I do think it would be fun to have a Twitter and have that aspect of online social interaction with my peers and classmates without the burden of accessing the discussion boards or filtering through the course blogs. Some of my favorite feminist accounts have already migrated themselves off of Twitter even though the bid is still pending and nothing has been finalized yet.
I'm just wondering if anyone else feels a bit conflicted over it? I think I might create it for this course, and then deactivate it at the conclusion of the semester.
You are not alone. Honestly I had just weaned myself off of a few social media sites due to the advice of my therapist. I was not overly excited to jump back in but here is why I am going to do it. I think that social media is a giant part of society and is here to stay. What I a aiming for is creating a healthy relationship with social media that benefits me. I like the analogy about buffets that Dr. Dennen used because I want to have the same relationship with food. Try it and if you hate it, then let it go and don't go back. Just wanted you to know that I hear you.
ReplyDeleteI hear that! The more stressed I get, the more my social media consumption tends to hit levels that I feel are not great for my overall mental health. I think a healthy relationship is totally doable, and it is something that I am going to be working on as well.
DeleteI am hesitant to have a Twitter, which is why I've never done it. No particular reason, I just do not want to keep up with multiple accounts. I did, however, create a Twitter for this class, just to test the waters and see how it works. There is a very strong chance I will deactivate after we conclude, so I did not link it to any of my other socials, just to keep it separate. So far I've liked a couple posts and retweeted something a classmate posted. Go me! LOL
ReplyDeleteGO YOU! /notsarcasm. I do think that's a big deal. I'm going to create a Twitter this week and start interacting with the class. I will also be keeping mine separate!
DeleteI hear you re: Elon Musk. Yup. I have a love/hate with Twitter. My account actually lies dormant most of the year, and then I crank it up for EME6414. I like to use Twitter more when I have a specific group of folks I'm trying to reach (like y'all).
ReplyDeleteI feel like that's how I will be using it. It's like I created a FB and an Instagram, and then I never evolved past that!
DeleteI have never really understood the point of twitter for those outside of certain fields like politics. In general, it is hard for me to know which forms of social media to invest in, so I tend to stick to what I know.
ReplyDeleteHi Staci! I don't have one (well, I will, for this class), but I frequently see a lot of Twitter screenshots show up on my other socials, and I do think it has a lot of value for public discourse, activism, and dissemination of information. But to your point, when I started hearing about Twitter, it was literally only my political savvy friends who were using it, and I think that's why I never got started with it early on. I just didn't feel like it was the right arena for me back then.
